New MOTM Report on Literature Review & Questionnaires Published

11.11.2025

We are excited to announce the release of the report Inclusion of Migrant Background Women in Sports: Literature Review and Need Analysis of Barriers and Possibilities from the Mentor on the Move (MOTM) project. Developed under the lead of the Migration Institute of Finland, the report provides both theoretical and practical insights into the participation of women of migrant background in sports. It highlights barriers, motivations, and opportunities, offering guidance for organizations and policymakers seeking to implement sports mentoring and empowerment programs.

While sport has proven potential to support health, well-being, and integration, women with a migration background often face multiple barriers, both individual and structural, that hinder their participation. This report aims to give voice to these women, highlighting their experiences, agency, and needs, while also acknowledging the essential role of service providers, organisations, and policymakers in creating truly inclusive environments.

The findings shed light on barriers, motivations, and opportunities, offering strategies to make sports more welcoming and meaningful for all women, regardless of background. Key recommendations include:

  • Creating safe and supportive spaces for all participants.

  • Organising low-threshold, flexible grassroots activities.

  • Involving migrant women and communities as trainers and in activity design.

  • Strengthening collaboration at local, regional, and national levels.

“It is our hope that the findings and recommendations of this report will support ongoing efforts across Europe to use sport not only as a tool for physical activity, but as a pathway to belonging, confidence, and empowerment.” - Claudia Nystrand, Project Coordinator
